The 2019-20 recipient of the Nina Brekelmans Memorial Endowed Scholarship is Hannah Markey. Congratulations Hannah!
About Hannah
Ms. Hannah Markey, a first-year candidate in Georgetown’s Masters of Arts in Arab Studies Program, is the 2019-2020 recipient of the Brekelmans Scholarship. Hannah graduated summa cum laude in 2019 from St. Lawrence University with a Bachelor of Arts in Global Studies and Rhetoric & Communication. During her time at St. Lawrence, Hannah studied in Nairobi, Kenya and Amman, Jordan where she examined gendered development programs in conflict-affected zones. While studying in Amman, Hannah worked as an English language instructor at the Jesuit Refugee Service. In her undergraduate thesis, she explored definitions of women’s empowerment generated by young women in urban Kenya and the political-economic, social-cultural, and historical context in which these definitions formed. Her thesis was shaped in part by her time interning at The BOMA Project and Flying Kites, two non-profit organizations working with vulnerable women and children in northern Kenya. In addition to her experiences related to women’s issues, Hannah is interested in international education and served as a peer advisor in the Center for International and Intercultural Studies for the Kenya and Jordan semester programs. After graduating, she interned at The Brookings Institution in Washington, DC in the Foreign Policy Program on the Security and Strategy team. After completing the MAAS program, Hannah intends to focus on addressing the displacement of women and girls at an international nongovernmental organization in the Arab world.
Mabrook Hannah! As always, thank you to everyone who donated and made the scholarship possible!
