The second annual Nina Brekelmans Race for Girls was held on April 22, 2017 to much success. Once again, we had a strong showing of 70 runners completing the 3K distance on the trails of Sport City. Click below for a full recap of the day's events (and photo galleries!) Results are posted below.
Our race day—the exciting culmination of our four-week running camp—kicked off with about fifty local and expat volunteers gearing up for the day. After collecting their race-day t-shirts and some breakfast snacks, the volunteers helped mark and prepare the 3-kilometer race course for the girls.
As the course came together, the participants started arriving, including about 20 girls from Irbid, five girls from the Ghor Valley (northern part of the Jordan Valley), and 45 from East and West Amman, many of whom are refugees. The diverse group of girls warmed up, chatted, and tried on their race-day t-shirts. In the background, a DJ provided by Sports City played music and family members bustled about taking pictures and drinking tea. The special attendance of Farah Hashem, Tamara Armoush, Georgia Cottle, and Hanoia Ali—all award-winning runners in Jordan—helped boost the girls’ energy at the start line. Read more!

2016 In Review
The inaugural Nina Brekelmans Race for Girls was held on April 9, 2016, in Amman, Jordan at Al Hussein Youth City, and was the first run in Jordan hosted specifically for girls.
Many thanks to our premier sponsor, Sports City, for the continued generosity by providing access to top-notch facilities and resource. We are also grateful to our race partners from Fulbright, Better Opportunities & Options for Sports Today (BOOST), and Unlimited Distances for making this a reality. Both the race and camp were supported by the 2015-2016 Jordan Fulbright cohort with funding through the Nina Brekelmans Community Service Prize.
His Excellency Dr. Sami Al Majali, head of the Jordanian Youth Council, was on hand to start the event, and an awards ceremony and speeches on nutrition followed at the conclusion.
